Herring in Wynantskill

Bring back the fish

The rivers of the Northeastern United States were once said to run silver with unimaginable numbers of migratory fish. Today’s shad and river herring runs are a remnant of their historic population levels.

But there is something you can do about it.

In the Hudson Valley, thousands of forgotten and obsolete dams block pathways to the ancestral spawning areas of the Hudson’s migratory fishes. These dams have prevented untold numbers of fish from replenishing their numbers. By taking down these dams, we can help shad, herring, and other Hudson River fish recover.

Join Riverkeeper today to help us remove these obstacles to restore critical habitat and bring back an abundance of life to the Hudson.
